Hancock County, Georgia was established in 1793, the county name originated from Greene and Washington counties. The county was named after John Hancock (1737 – 93), President of the Continental Congress; first signer of the Declaration of Independence. Hancock County has a total area of 473 square miles, with a total population of 8996 residents (and a population density of 19.02 residents per square mile).
