Wilkes County, Georgia was established in 1777, the county name originated from Cherokee and Creek Cessions of 1773. The county was named after John Wilkes (1727 – 97), a British Member of Parliament who sympathized with the cause of American independence. Wilkes County has a total area of 471 square miles, with a total population of 10076 residents (and a population density of 21.39 residents per square mile).
