Sumter County, Georgia was established in 1831, the county name originated from Lee County. The county was named after General Thomas Sumter (1734 – 1832), the “Fighting Gamecock,” a hero of the Revolutionary War. Sumter County has a total area of 485 square miles, with a total population of 31554 residents (and a population density of 65.06 residents per square mile).
