Gratiot County was established in 1831. The county was originally formed from unorganized Michigan territory. Gratiot County was named after Captain Charles Gratiot (1788-1855), built Fort Gratiot at the present site of Port Huron. The county has a total of 42476 residents, and makes up an area of 572 square miles.
