Houghton County was established in 1845. The county was originally formed from parts of Marquette County and Ontonagon County. Houghton County was named after Dr. Douglass Houghton (1809-1845), first state geologist of Michigan, physician and surgeon, mayor of Detroit (1842-1843). The county has a total of 36628 residents, and makes up an area of 1,502 square miles.
