DeKalb County, Georgia was established in 1822, originating from Henry, Gwinnett, and Fayette counties. The county was named after “Baron” Johann DeKalb (1721 – 80) a German who accompanied Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette, and was inspector general of the Colonial Army. DeKalb County has a total area of 268 square miles, with a total population of 707089 residents (and a population density of 2638.39 residents per square mile).
