Ogemaw County was established in 1840. The county was formed from unorganized Michigan territory.. Annexed to Iosco County in 1867 and reinstated in 1873. Ogemaw County was named after the Ojibwe word ogimaa, meaning “chief” or “leader”. The county has a total of 21699 residents, and makes up an area of 575 square miles.
