The county was named after Edward Livingston (1764–1836), prominent jurist, Congressman from New York and Louisiana, and U.S. Secretary of State from 1831-33. The Livingston County court complex is located in the county seat city of Pontiac.

Formed from portions of LaSalle and McLean County, the county has a reported population of 38950 residents and comprises a total area of 1,044 square miles within the state of Illinois.
