About the County: Jackson County, Illinois was founded in 1816. The county was named after Andrew Jackson (1767–1845), seventh President of the United States, United States Senator from Tennessee, and general in the War of 1812. The Jackson County court complex is located in the county seat city of Murphysboro.

Formed from portions of Randolph County and Johnson County, the county has a reported population of 60218 residents and comprises a total area of 588 square miles within the state of Illinois. In 2016, there was a reported unemployement rate of 7.7% in Jackson County. A total of 21914 tax returns were filed in 2015.
