Genesee County was established in 1835. The county was originally formed from parts of Lapeer County, Saginaw County and Shiawassee County. Genesee County was named after the Seneca word, “je-nis-hi-yeh,” meaning “beautiful valley”, and after western New York valley from which many settlers originated. The county has a total of 425790 residents, and makes up an area of 649 square miles. The county seat is in the city of Flint.In 2016, the county reported a total of 10235 automobile crashes (of which 349 were alcohol-related).
