About the County: Custer County was established in 1877. Formed from portions of Fremont County, the county was named in memory of George Armstrong Custer, (1839 – 1876), the U.S. Army colonel defeated and killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.The county seat and county court building is located in the city of Westcliffe, Colorado.
