About the County: Cook County, Illinois was founded in 1831. The county was named after Daniel Pope Cook (1794–1827), politician and first Attorney General of Illinois. The Cook County court complex is located in the county seat city of Chicago.

Formed from portions of Putnam County, the county has a reported population of 5194675 residents and comprises a total area of 946 square miles within the state of Illinois. In 2016, there was a reported unemployement rate of 10.4% in Cook County. A total of 2212736 tax returns were filed in 2015.
